Programs FEATURE STORY

R.E.D.ZONE Football

Tackle and Flag Football When the summer starts to slowly wind down, there’s an anticipation building for what is – undoubtedly – the start of the country’s most popular sport. That’s right, football is almost back! For the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, that means the return of both youth tackle football and the newly minted flag football program that started last year. The R.E.D. ZONE Parks and Recreation Youth Football Program has been a staple in the department for years, and is a joint collaboration between Greensboro, High Point, and Thomasville Parks and Recreation Departments. Offered at Glenwood, Leonard, Lewis, Peeler, and Warnersville Recreation Centers – players who normally played for Windsor are invited to participate at other centers – the league is broken into three-separate age groups, including: Mites (7-8 year olds), Junior Varsity (9-10 year olds), and Varsity (11-12 year olds). Age for each player is determined as of September 1 of the current year. The ultimate goal is to provide a positive opportunity for youth ages 7-12 to play tackle football on an organized

team in a structured program emphasizing safety, correct fundamental skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship and fair play. Registration for tackle football begins in early June, and the cost is $50 per player – equipment is provided, but players will need to provide their own cleats and mouth guards. Practices will start up in early August, and games start mid-September. If you’re looking for something with a little less physical contact, the flag football program offers a chance for both boys and girls to take to the field for a fun time! There is a coed team for both boys and girls ages 5-7, a boys league for ages 8-10 and 11-13, and an all-girls league from 8-10 and 11-13 years of age. Age determined as of April 30 of the current year, and the cost per player is $75. Games will take place on Friday evenings and/or on Saturday morning/afternoon from April through June at Hester Park, 3615 Deutzia St., while practices will be held at Glenwood Fields, 2010 Coliseum Blvd.

Programs FEATURE STORY

Gateway Gardens In southeast Greensboro there’s a magical place where you can walk the grounds of a green oasis, step into a large apple, and watch a frog stand on its two legs and water its garden. It sounds too good to be true, right? Well at Gateway Gardens a fantastical world of whimsy meets a green space where flowers and vegetables grow. Located at 2800 E. Gate City Blvd., the gardens have acted as an entryway into the city from Interstate 40 since it first opened to the public in 2011 as a collaboration between the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful. The garden itself is free and open to the public daily, and spreads across 11-acres – with room for visitors to explore its many offerings, including the Michel Family Children's Garden, the Weaver Foundation Heritage Garden & Plaza and Joseph M. Bryan Foundation Water Sculpture, and the Great Lawn. There’s also the Gateway Garden Visitor's Center, which is available to rent for meetings, conferences, retreats, weddings, and more.

Programming Along with facilities, there’s also a ton of programming at Gateway Gardens. Gateway is the only botanical garden in Greensboro with a children's educational garden, and an emphasis on teaching the area’s youth. As a part of the Edible Schoolyard Program that happens the second Wednesday of the month from April to September, children have the opportunity to grow and harvest fruit, herbs, and vegetables. This is a great program for kids and adults who want to learn more about where food comes from. For participants under 12 years old, a parent or guardian must be present. There are also other programs for all age ranges: everything from creating a windowsill herb garden to building your own bird feeder. On top of the usual programming, the garden hosts events, none of which are bigger than Makers Way at Gateway Gardens. Makers Way, an event hosted by the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and Greensboro Beautiful, is a perfect event for those who love both exploring green spaces and enjoying the arts. During this event visitors are encouraged to stroll through

10

the garden and experience demos from "makers" from many disciplines including glass blowing, jewelry making, and pottery. There also food trucks, beer and cider, and live performances. Folks can also vote on their favorite chalk drawing from the Chalk Walk that takes place the day before the event. Future Plans The nonprofit, Greensboro Beautiful, Inc. works to fund and support future projects in The City of Greensboro's Gardens, including Gateway Gardens. The growth (pun intended) at Gateway Gardens is not over yet, as three additional spaces are planned for the future – including the gathering garden, Japanese garden, and a natural heritage preserve and White Oak Forest.

The gathering garden is planned to become one of the most utilized areas of the garden by offering a space for a couple’s big day. The garden will be able to accommodate up to 300 wedding guests, so there will be plenty of space to party it up. At the Japanese garden, traditional Japanese master gardening techniques will be utilized to create a tranquil, meditative space for those looking for a place to relax. Meanwhile, tucked away in the back corner across from the Japanese garden, the natural heritage preserve and white oak forest will offer additional room for a quiet stroll. Utilizing the existing forest, this area will feature elevated treetop structures and provide a perfect setting for bird and wildlife viewing and native plant exploration.
