New toys and cash donations, which will be used to shop for additional gifts, are also welcome. WANTED: TOYS AND HELPFUL TEENS

There is nothing like a gift to brighten someone’s day. With the Greensboro Youth Council’s Santa’s Workshop, local teens get to experience that special joy. The teen-led service organization will host its annual gift-giving program beginning November 8. Residents have until December 3 to donate cash or toys for the program. Each year, Santa’s Workshop provides holiday presents for 200-plus local families, who are identified by local service agencies. GYC’s teen leaders and volunteers have been running the program for more than 40 years! Santa’s Workshop is a great reason to clean out toy chests for items children no longer use. The program accepts a wide variety of used items – such as games, puzzles, electronics, dolls, or sports equipment. Just make sure all the pieces are incorporated, each item is in good working order, and they are relatively clean.

DONATE: Drop your new or gently used toys for children 6 months to 13 years old November 8 to December 3 at the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St. Visit www.greensboro- nc.gov/SantasWorkshop for more donation locations or to give a monetary donation. VOLUNTEER: Greensboro Youth Council is looking for teen volunteers to assist with cleaning and sorting toys. Visit www. greensboroyouthcouncil.com to sign up.

Greensboro Parks and Recreation has launched its first new sport league in more than a decade – Greensboro

Parks and Recreation departments across the county are contemplating esports league options as private organizations and colleges have proven there is a demand for this kind of play. Three-quarters of US households own a device that they use to play video games, according to Gamesindustry.biz. To join Greensboro’s league, download the free Mission Control app. Upcoming league play will be advertised to league members and at www. greensboro-nc.gov/esports.

Esports. “The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department is excited to expand its roster of family-friendly, competitive sport leagues with Greensboro Esports. This is going to be a great way to bring our community’s gamers together to develop their skills, make connections with new people, and have a blast doing it,” said Parks and Recreation Director Nasha McCray. The inaugural season started summer 2021, offering people aged 7 to adult to join game play for Madden 21, NBA 2K21, Fortnite, or Rocket League 2v2. New, six-week seasons start year-round, and games offered will change. There are separate age brackets for children and adults.

Want to play? Registration costs $10 per game per season and first-time participants will receive a free Greensboro Esports T-shirt. Register by downloading the Mission Control app. Ages 7 and up | $

UNCG GRADUATE STUDENT HELPS IDENTIFY ACCESSIBLE FEATURES AT CITY PARKS

lot easier to find those places. UNCG Parks and Recreation management graduate student Meredith Murray, who received her Master of Science in May, spent months touring City of Greensboro park facilities identifying inclusive and accessible features as part of her community recreation Ma tster’s capstone project. Her data was used to update the Parks and Recreation website, www.gsoparksandrec.org, to better identify those features. “The more I went through the curriculum, I realized I had such a passion for the community recreation side of things, and especially learning how to make parks more inclusive for people with disabilities,” Murray said. “There are so many people that are not

necessarily considered when people design parks and design programs, and I think that needs to change.” Murray reached out the Greensboro Parks and Recreation’s Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation (AIR) unit to propose doing her thesis project on City parks. “I wanted to visit the parks and highlight what is currently accessible or inclusive and what improvements could be made to those parks that would make them more so,” Murray said. AIR Coordinator Sharon Williams was excited about the project. “I wanted to work with Meredith because it’s something that is needed in our community, so individuals with disabilities know what to expect when

they go to our parks,” Williams said. An accessible park feature is one that can be reasonably accessed by someone using a mobility device, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair. An inclusive park feature is physically accessible by someone using a mobility device and has additional characteristics to make it more usable by people with varying abilities, such as sensory play features designed for children with low vision or a sensory disorder. “You don’t necessarily have to make these special structures for individuals with disabilities. You just have to design with all groups in mind,” Murray said.

SUCCESS AGAINST ALL ODDS Magnolia Long was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was six months old and was given a life expectancy of 34 years. When applying for college, she wondered if she would be able to succeed despite all of her health challenges. Four years and a life-changing surgery later, she has the degree to prove that she did more than just survive – she thrived thanks to UNC Greensboro’s flexibility and support. “I have so much life to live and so much to offer, and UNCG has given me the opportunities to do things I’ve always wanted to do and become the person I’ve always dreamt of becoming.”
