City of Greensboro Personnel Policy Manuał

Disabilities Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, is a known impairment that substantially limits or restricts one or more major life activity including, but not limited to, caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working; and major bodily functions including, but not limited to, functions of the immune system, normal cell growth, digestive, bowel, bladder, neurological, brain, respiratory, circulatory, endocrine, and reproductive functions. 5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES 5.1 Flexible schedules must not result in routinely scheduled overtime. The People & Culture (P&C) Department is available to assist with designing schedules that meet this criterion. 5.2 Each Department Director will have the option of allowing or not allowing flexible scheduling based on the nature of the department’s services. 5.3 Each employee’s flex-time work schedule must be approved by the immediate supervisor and Department Director or designee. 5.4 Adequate personnel, including supervisory personnel, will be available to carry out work activities without creating any loss in services to the public. 5.5 If it is determined that the flex-time option is hindering operations or is being abused, the Department Director may discontinue flex-time on an individual or work group basis at any time. 5.6 All general offices of the City that interact directly with the public or internal personnel are expected to be open and staffed each working day, Monday-Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm. 5.7 Departments are required to make all reasonable efforts to accommodate a request for a flexible work schedule from an employee with a known disability. 6.0 PROCEDURES 6.1 An employee who would like to work other than the current assigned regular schedule should make the request, in writing, to the immediate supervisor. The request should include whether or not the requested flex-time is expected to be permanent or if the request is for a limited period to accommodate a personal circumstance of limited duration. 6.2 When the supervisor receives the request to utilize flex-time, the supervisor will review operational schedules, previously approved flex-time schedules and other applicable information to determine whether or not to recommend the flex-time arrangement. If an employee is requesting the flex-time based on a known disability, the supervisor is expected to accommodate the request if at all possible. 6.3 If the supervisor recommends the request for flex-time, the supervisor will forward the request through the chain of command to the Department Director or designated manager.
