An employee who remains absent from work for a minimum of 60 consecutive days, because of the disabling illness or injury, with no anticipated work to return work date, must contact the P&C Benefits to initiate the disability retirement and the Long Term Disability application process. When disability retirement is indicated, the employee is responsible for: 1. Scheduling a meeting with P&C Benefits to discuss disability retirement options and the process or personal accounts or from accounts of previous employers. Employees are not obligated to make any purchase, even if an estimate is received. 6.0 PROCEDURES 6.1 Early or Service Retirement A. An employee who is contemplating retirement can select the most appropriate retirement date and calculate the monthly retirement benefit online at https://orbit.myncretirement. com/ . This calculation is an estimate of the monthly retirement benefit. The official notice of the employee’s pension amount is provided by NCLGERS in writing after the employee’s application has been reviewed and approved. Retirement dates from NCLGERS are always the first day of the month selected. B. At least four (4) months before the chosen retirement date, the employee should contact P&C Benefits to make an appointment to receive guidance on completing the retirement application and to receive additional information about the City’s retirement process (estimated final payout, retiree insurance options, etc.) See the Benefits - Retired Employees policy on page 267 for more information. The retirement application should be completed approximately 120 days prior to the anticipated retirement date to ensure adequate time to process. C. The employee is responsible for notifying the employee’s department of intent to retire at least thirty (30) days in advance of the retirement date. The department will be automatically notified by P&C Benefits of the employee’s intent to retire on the 10th of the month in which the employee retires. 6.2 Disability Retirement A. When a benefit eligible employee is unable to perform the essential functions of the position due to an illness or an injury defined as totally and permanently disabling, the submission of a disability retirement application to the North Carolina Retirement System may be an option. B. An employee who remains absent from work for a minimum of 60 consecutive days, because of the disabling illness or injury, but can show evidence to the satisfaction of the Department Director and P&C Employee Success Partner (ESP) that a return to work in the employee’s current position will occur within six (6) months of the initial leave date, should consult with P&C Benefits regarding disability retirement and Long Term Disability application options.
