1.0 POLICY STATEMENT I t is the policy of the City of Greensboro to maintain a workplace that is welcoming, inclusive, and equitable for all people. The City does not tolerate harassment and other forms of discrimination and behaviors that threaten the health, safety, productivity and well-being of its employees. No person shall be subject to discrimination. This includes, but is not limited to, being refused employment; denied promotion or assignment; or being dismissed and/or harassed based on an individual’s protected status. Federal law identifies certain protected statuses and requires that employers create and enforce policies to prevent discrimination of those protected statuses in the workplace. Additionally, City Council has identified other protected statuses specific to employment with the City of Greensboro. This policy covers unlawful harassment and discrimination based on a person’s protected status as identified by Federal law and City Council. These include: age, color, ethnicity, familial status, gender or sex, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, hair texture and hairstyle (commonly associated with race or national origin), marital status, mental or physical disability, military status, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion or sexual orientation. Further, this policy prohibits workplace bullying, regardless of a person’s protected status. 2.0 PURPOSE T his policy establishes procedures to help the City of Greensboro maintain a workplace free from harassment, discrimination and other unwelcome actions and conduct. This policy establishes expectations for employees as well as supervisors and management officials as it relates to preventing and addressing harassment and discrimination in the workplace. 3.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all City employees. 4.0 DEFINITIONS 4.1 Accused – The person who is named in a complaint as allegedly violating this policy by harassing, discriminating against or bullying an employee. Also see Respondent. 4.2 Bullying – Repeated verbal, physical and/or social behavior that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm to another regardless of protected status. 4.3 Employee – For purposes of this policy, an employee includes unpaid interns, volunteers, and other agents working on behalf of the City whether benefited, non-benefited, full-time or part-time.
