05.04 Additional Park Opportunities Strategic planning for parks can guide land investments, whether through purchasing vacant lots, repurposing underused public land, or forming partnerships with land trusts and private donors. inclusive, and sustainable approach, communities can build a vibrant park system that improves quality of life and promotes health, equity, and environmental stewardship.
In addition to improving the parks analyzed in previous sections, new parks will be needed to serve south Greensboro. As previously noted, the south and east portions of the study area, which are yet to be developed, provide opportunities to expand the park system through partnerships and land acquisition. In the core of the study area, existing natural features can be improved and made more accessible as park space, especially where adjacent sites can be developed to serve mutual advantages such as usage, natural surveillance, access, safety, shared infrastructure, parking, etc. Key ideas related to these are provided below, including: » Parnership and potential improvements at New Goshesn Community Church and ballfield » Buffalo Creek ecological open space » Idea for a gateway park at Randleman Road and Elmsley Drive New Goshen Community Church Partner with New Goshen Community Church to enhance their historic baseball field. Provide better access, including neighborhood pedestrian connections and greenway alignment. Improve and program the outdoor facility and celebrate the site’s special history and character.
Funding is a critical component, and Greensboro may pursue a mix of local, state, and federal grants, as well as bond referendums and public-private partnerships. Leveraging these resources allows for the development of new parks and the enhancement of existing ones with amenities like playgrounds, restrooms, lighting, and accessible pathways. In addition, integrating green infrastructure—such as rain gardens and native plantings—can improve environmental sustainability while enhancing the park experience. To support these physical improvements, Greensboro will also need to invest in programming and staffing. Hiring recreation coordinators, offering youth and senior programs, and hosting community events can activate park spaces and foster a sense of ownership. Maintenance and safety are equally important, requiring consistent funding and collaboration with parks and law enforcement. By taking a holistic,
