4 Pepperstone/ Greenhaven This area offers an opportunity for enhancement through landscaping and improved design practices. Replanting trees and adding landscaping along Greenhaven Drive and Pepperstone Drive can help soften the corridor’s appearance. Encouraging beautification for private sites visible from the freeway, and attracting businesses that have a proven track record of looking nice from the freeway (car dealerships, etc.) further improve the area’s visual character. 7 Randleman Road To transform Randleman Road into an attractive, walkable urban corridor, the Randleman Road Phase 2 Corridor Plan emphasizes enhancing the
5 I-5965 Interstate I-40/I-85 Business Project Coordinate with the planned NCDOT project along this area to consider beautification, gateway treatments, and other related local community benefits. Explore the strategic removal, realignment, and/or retrofitting of the various frontage roads and on/off ramps in ways that improve the local transportation network and enhance both safety and visual appearance. Pleasant Garden Road To preserve the rural character of a roadway, design strategies could emphasize harmony with the natural landscape and minimize urban features. This could include using narrow lanes with soft shoulders, maintaining scenic views, and incorporating native vegetation. Infrastructure could be subtle, with low-impact signage and lighting, while development along the road could reflect rural architectural styles and avoid dense, commercial patterns. These approaches could help retain the area’s open, quiet, and natural feel. 8 Rural Character Preservation of
In addition to the Urban Loop SCOD, three other segments along the study area boundary may benefit from being explored for preservation of vegetation and limitation of outdoor advertising. These include: » a portion of US Highway 29 from Greenhaven Drive to the merge with I-40, » US Highway 220 between US Highway 29 and I-85, and » Old US Highway 421 north of Pleasant Garden Road. 6 Visual Corridor Overlay Zone for Elm Euguene Street The City of Greensboro has nine active Visual Corridor Overlay Zones (see map ) that effectively prevent new outdoor advertising signs from being constructed. The district is intended to protect and preserve the appearance of gateways and to promote traffic safety in areas that are especially congested with traffic entering and leaving the city. These include scenic corridors such as West Friendly Avenue, North Elm Street, Holden Road, and others. South Elm-Eugene Street could also be considered for a similar overlay to support corridor improvement goals.
