Greensboro Plan2Play Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2019

GREENSBORO PLAN2PLAY MASTER PLAN - 101

Action 2g. Create consistent wayfinding and signage to communicate Department offerings and ensure safe connections to parks and trails. Install consistent, contemporary signage and furnishings that reflect community character - Many beloved green spaces are the result of strong community stewardship to serve their specific needs for play, community gathering, and connectivity. While it is important to establish a consistent brand, and cohesive wayfinding and signage across all city-owned parks, facilities, and trails and greenways, elements of the city’s diverse communities can be infused into the implementation of those park elements. Other cities have taken a similar approach to branding their recreational assets, using colors and configurations to demarcate a unique condition or place. After undergoing a master plan effort, Burlington Vermont developed new brand guidelines to celebrate their three divisions and better highlight their offerings: parks, recreation, and waterfront. The Burlington Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department

Clearly communicate policies and regulations - Communicate policies and regulations visibly to the community through the creation of new park and facilities rules signs written using simple terms in both Spanish and English. These rule signs should be posted online, on park and trailhead signage, and in Department facilities. For illegal hunting, add language to trailhead signage and online with directions for reporting illegal hunting. Work with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to identify best practices for hunting signage, appropriate policies, and outreach and education to the public for reporting. Evaluate the appropriateness for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) in all planning efforts to improve safety in parks, facilities, neighborhoods, and trail corridors.

implemented the brand everywhere throughout the system - from signs in parks, and painted flooring in recreation centers and pavilions to t-shirts and skateboards. Synchronize parks branding with other relevant city wayfinding/signage. While the Department will be responsible for the wayfinding and signage updates within their parks and facilities, there are ways to partner with the city to invest in wayfinding along greenways, to civic anchors, at bus stops, and other city destinations to broaden the impact and awareness of the system. The City can support departmental branding on infrastructure projects like street crossings to parks with painting that includes brand colors or logos. In addition, the Department should invest in strategic marketing of the City's trails and greenways to raise awareness and encourage use of these important resources. This should include specialty trails such as mountain biking and the lake's blueways to garner interest from beginners and experienced enthusiasts.
