Discover Greensboro Winter/Spring 2026

Featured STORY

Greensboro Lakes Greensboro is home to more than 300,000 people, and getting outdoors is still as easy as ever. The city’s lakes offer quiet places to explore, learn, and relax. Lakes Brandt, Higgins, and Townsend are major outdoor attractions, and the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department offers activities at each of them. On the Lakes Lake Higgins is a 226-acre municipal reservoir. It is the smallest of the three city lakes, but it offers some of the best fishing in the area. You can fish from a boat or the pier. Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and canoeing are allowed on the lake. A launch ramp is open for motorboats. You can launch your own canoe or kayak year-round. Rowboats, kayaks, and canoes are available for daily rentals May 1 through October 31. The Taylor Turner Hatchery Pond, established in 1988, nurtures catfish and trout in season. It is also the site of the family fishing program beginning in April, where families can try their hand at bringing in the big one. Poles and bait are available for use. You bring the luck. If you prefer a land activity, the department runs The Greensboro Mountain Bike Experience and offers clinics beginning in March. Returning this year was our very popular preschool mountain biking program. The preschool program gives young riders a chance to build early skills.

Lake Brandt, an 816-acre reservoir, and Lake Townsend, a 1,542-acre reservoir, offer a variety of fishing opportunities, as well as on-water exploration, including kayaking and canoeing, among other fun things! Learning in Nature Parks and Recreation also offer outdoor learning programs. At Lake Townsend, archery classes beginning in April teach basic skills. All supplies and equipment are provided for these classes. Guided hiking tours across the area give participants a chance to explore our extensive trail system through the winter. The hikes vary in difficulty so there is something for beginners and experienced hikers. Our Creature Classroom programs teach residents and visitors across the city about wildlife. These programs are popular with schools and scout groups working on badge requirements. The ECO Bus also travels around the city, and carries environmental artifacts and a few live "friends” to help visitors learn about the natural world.
