FEATURE STORY Programs

Knowa Student WhoOvercame Their Struggles? NominateThem! For more than 60 years, Summit Rotary and Parks and Recreation have honored students who demonstrate personal and academic growth despite obstacles. Know a teen who fits that description? Nominate them for the Student Improvement Award – and you could win, too! The awards honor students who once were headed down the wrong path, but have now changed their lives. It honors students who have overcome obstacles such as a personal tragedy, the divorce of their parents, pregnancy, a disability or sickness, or learning to speak English. Each month a review committee selects two monthly winners to honor at a luncheon at Starmount Country Club. Each winner receives a $100 gift certificate. Their nominators also receive a $50 gift certificate. “We really get the opportunity to read through and hear a lot of awesome stories,” said Britt Huggins, of Parks and Recreation’s Youth Services section. “We can never make a wrong decision because these kids have all done a great job.” Joe Kelly, a long-time Student Improvement Award committee member, said Summit Rotary has a special emphasis on supporting youth through its scholarship and mentoring programs. It has been running these student awards since 1959.

“In almost every case, every student that wins it, this is the first positive reinforcement and recognition that they have ever gotten. These are not your straight ‘A’ students. They are not your typical award winners,” Kelly said. “Some of the stories you hear just tear you up, the things they have to overcome.” Some of the students honored last year were dealing with the loss of family members, having to work to help support their household, struggling with health issues, fighting to get out of gangs, and trying to learn English, all while trying to maintain grades and get along with their peers. Last year Maya Grace Long from Middle College at GTCC and Drew Pais from Northeast Guilford High School were chosen as the overall Students of the Year. Nominate A Student! • Who can be nominated? Middle or high school students. • Who can nominate? Non-family members who have regular access to student, including teachers, coaches, counselors, therapists, or school officials. • How to submit: Fill out the application form at www.greensboro-nc.gov/studentimprovementaward and email it to sia@greensboro-nc.gov. • Deadline: Monthly, December 2022 to April 2023.

Peeler Recreation Center

Peeler is Ready for Its Close-Up The accessible, paved walking path is in. The environmentally-friendly rainwater system is feeding the new baseball field. The new playground plus exercise center is ready for fun and fitness. A recreation center mural and interior refresh are in process. And before long, viewers from anywhere in the world will be able to catch the view from home plate as spring baseball leagues hit the field. Peeler Recreation Center and Community Park, fresh off a $1.2 million upgrade, is ready for its close-up. “I really just want to reenergize the center. I want it to be a place where all of the community feels safe and comfortable going to and they all have something to go there for," said Peeler’s new Center Director Karenga Arifu, who came to Greensboro from Brooklyn with more than 20 years in youth development, teaching, and community oriented programs.

The project, in the works since 2018, was funded by 2016 voter-approved bonds, a $30,000 Cone Mills Foundation donation for the playground, and a $600,000 grant from the National Park Service’s Outdoor Legacy Partnership Program, which guarantees the space will remain a park forever. “Based upon us getting that Outdoor Legacy Partnership Program grant we were able to do everything in the master plan,” said Shawna Tillery, Parks and Recreation’s planning and project development division manager. The recreation center got an improved parking lot, inviting entrance seating, bathroom improvements, and interior paint for program rooms and the gym. Creative Greensboro, the City’s office for arts and culture, is working with a group of community stakeholders to install a $10,000 mural on the outside wall of the recreation center, facing Phillips Avenue. The community group chose Greensboro artist James Raleigh Jr. – a NC A&T State University art and design graduate, art teacher, and owner of Victorious

Visions, a design and painting company – to lead the work. The mural will be installed by March 2023. The park has been transformed with amenities like seating, solar picnic tables that will charge your mobile device, improved field lighting to allow nighttime play, bike racks, and landscaping. The new baseball field lighting comes with a first-of-its-kind perk: a MuscoVision Automated Sports Broadcast system that will livestream games on a subscription service. “They can watch youth baseball games. Also with their subscription, they can watch other games on the system throughout the country,” Tillery said. If residents like this new broadcasting option, Parks and Recreation may extend it to other fields in the future.

pocket parks, bike fix-it stations, and more. Now, with the final leg of construction on the horizon, Parks and Recreation is integrating the Downtown Greenway into its suite of outdoor programs. Phipps said that will mean focusing on its special features – from its extensive public art installations to its gardens. “The Downtown Greenway is so much more than just a paved multi-use path,” she says. “It serves as a fresh air art gallery, urban oasis, outdoor history museum, transportation connector, and recreational play space all in one!” Parks and Recreation will continue to expand long-standing, popular initiatives, like weekly fitness programs in partnership with the Greensboro YMCA, Wheels on the Greenway, and the Downtown Greenway Run and Block Party. Phipps is also exploring community art programs in conjunction with new neighborhood benches and the Freedom Cornerstone, designed by the renowned artist Radcliffe Bailey for the corner of Murrow Boulevard and Gate City Boulevard. Phipps would also like to take advantage of the public orchard, beehive, pollinator gardens, and two streams along the greenway to incorporate some environmental programs. Planning is still in the works, but Phipps said to expect an “eventful year.”

Getting to Know the Downtown Greenway

It’s an exciting time for the Downtown Greenway. And Chelsea Phipps, Parks and Recreation’s new greenways and gardens program coordinator, is here for it. Hired in 2022, Phipps is the first City employee in a newly created position responsible for running special events and programs for the four-mile loop around the center city. Previously, the nonprofit Action Greensboro managed this task as part of its long-time commitment to fundraising, managing art installations, and promoting the Downtown Greenway through its construction phase. The urban trail circles downtown with one-of-a kind art pieces, native plantings, an edible orchard,
