Keeley Park Garden
FEATURE STORY Programs
From the Garden Julie Hale, Community Garden Coordinator Greensboro Parks and Recreation offers many unique programs to serve our community. Our Community Garden Program provides residents an opportunity to grow their own food by renting plots in one of five organically-managed gardens in our neighborhood and regional parks. Seventy-six plots are available between our five community gardens, and annual rental fees range from $15 to $35 per plot, depending on the garden location and plot size. Enrollment begins each year on January 1 and is first come, first served. Whether you grow food in a community garden or your backyard, vegetable gardening brings lots of rewards in terms of fresh, healthy eating. Local food takes on new meaning when it comes from your own garden! We’re fortunate in the Greensboro area to be able to grow fresh vegetables for nine months of the year. If you plant seeds and seedlings at the right times, you could be harvesting tasty veggies from early April to late December. And while summer is probably the default season for a lot of folks to grow vegetables, spring and fall gardening can really extend our harvest options. Spring Gardening February kicks off the garden season in our part of North Carolina, since we often experience “spring like” days in what is still, technically, winter. Cold-hardy sugar snap, snow, and English peas, and greens like arugula, spinach, and kale, can all
potentially be planted in February during milder spells. Once March arrives, it’s full speed ahead with spring planting. Our average last frost date is around April 3, so make sure to plant only cold-tolerant vegetables at this time of year. Leafy greens of all kinds thrive in cool weather, so take your pick of a vast array of lettuce and Asian green varieties available today. How to get involved Contact Julie Hale, Community Garden Coordinator at 336-373-4549 or via e-mail at juliet.hale@greensboro-nc.gov Community Garden Locations: • Keeley Park, 4100 Keeley Road • Steelman Park, 970 Gregory Street • Northside Village Park, 1714 Kay Street • Gorrell Street, 401 Gorrell Street • Maywood Park, 2009 Maywood Street

Root vegetables like carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes also thrive in cool weather. Just make sure to plant them early to enjoy before summer heat descends. Cool-season spring vegetables usually start declining at some point in May as the days start to heat up. But by that point, it’s time to plant all of those warm-season favorites – from classic tomatoes to prolific zucchini. Summer Gardening Start with seeds (large-seeded varieties of beans, squash, and cucumbers are easiest) or transplants, small plants that are germinated from seeds indoors prior to putting them in the garden. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants all need a head-start on the season, and are best planted out as transplants.
iCan Swim Camp plants that show up way before Easter at garden centers! Even if we are spared unexpected late frosts, warm-season vegetables don’t appreciate cool nights and cold soil. You don’t gain much by planting too early, so be patient – the summer season is long, and there’s plenty of time to plant. Any way you choose to grow – whether in a nearby community garden or your backyard – gardening is a great way to connect with nature, de-stress from the daily grind, and reap the many benefits of growing your own healthy, fresh vegetables. It’s almost spring - time to start planting! Resist the urge to plant tender, warm-season vegetables such as peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and okra, before warm weather has come to stay. Pay no attention to those beautiful tomato

partnerships to make that happen. The system's growth could not have been done without the passion and persistence of thousands of local volunteers. Meet the Volunteers From the beginning, volunteer assistance from local, outdoor-enthusiast clubs was a crucial resource to building, maintaining, and advocating for trails. Today, two organizations remain instrumental in keeping and growing quality trails, the Piedmont Fat Tire Society and Friends of the Mountains-to Sea Trail. Group members put in more than 3,848 volunteer hours in 2022. The Fat Tire Society is a group of biking enthusiasts who have long advocated to grow the City’s mountain biking trail network. “Back in the 1990s, there were only three places to mountain bike and there were only about three miles to ride,” said Mark Gatehouse, a Fat Tire Society member and long-time trails volunteer. He was among those who advocated for trail expansion. “Greensboro City Parks and Recreation and the Fat Tire Society both accomplished together what neither of us could do individually. We have built 30 miles of trails at very little expense to the Greensboro Parks and Recreation department.” Peeler Recreation Center
This year Greensboro Parks and Recreation joins partners across the state in celebrating the North Carolina Year of the Trail – the largest statewide celebration of trails and outdoor recreation in state history. As part of the Great Trails State Coalition, we’re encouraging people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to try some of our 100+ miles of local trails. Our trails are an important source of health, wellness, and safe transportation to community members and an economic draw. We hope to inspire new interest and investment to help grow and expand our great system. Connections Matter Let’s start by telling a story of partnerships. The City of Greensboro has been building greenways and trails across the park system since the 1970s. In the mid-1990s, the Parks and Recreation Department created a specialized trails and greenways section to lead the effort to maintain and grow the system with new, interconnected trails. For the last 50 years, the City relied on grants, individual and corporate donations, and powerful

With approximately 350 members, the Fat Tire Society monitors trails and closes them when rainy weather has made them impassable – a critical step in ensuring trail longevity. Its volunteers maintain a City trail hotline (336 373-2MTB) and Twitter communications about current trail conditions. “We have trail captains who are passionate members who help volunteer to monitor and organize maintenance and be our eyes and ears on the trail,” Gatehouse said. The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail are volunteers and advocates who support the trail that stretches across North Carolina from Cherokee to the Outer Banks. Local group members help maintain the portion of the trail that routes through Greensboro, including the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway and some of the City’s watershed trails. The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail come from all walks of life, said Greg Yahn, the group’s Guilford County task force leader who’s been volunteering with the group since the 2000s. “They like to hike. Most of us like the idea of giving back,” Yahn said of the volunteers. And they like the idea of leaving a lasting legacy of green space where people can get away into nature.
Both organizations manage monthly trails maintenance sessions in coordination with Parks and Recreation’s trails and greenways team. Volunteers handle general maintenance, like sawing and clearing downed trees, trimming vegetation, rerouting paths, installing trail guide markers, and repairing and building infrastructure like boardwalks and bridges. It’s a big help to the three full-time City staff members who are responsible for maintaining 100 miles of trails and greenways, said Parks and Recreation Trails Supervisor Evan Clark. “We all work together to get things done. It is huge – invaluable. You really can’t put a price tag on it,” Clark said. “It saves us so much time.”
