Discover Greensboro Program Guide Summer 2023

With approximately 350 members, the Fat Tire Society monitors trails and closes them when rainy weather has made them impassable – a critical step in ensuring trail longevity. Its volunteers maintain a City trail hotline (336 373-2MTB) and Twitter communications about current trail conditions. “We have trail captains who are passionate members who help volunteer to monitor and organize maintenance and be our eyes and ears on the trail,” Gatehouse said. The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail are volunteers and advocates who support the trail that stretches across North Carolina from Cherokee to the Outer Banks. Local group members help maintain the portion of the trail that routes through Greensboro, including the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway and some of the City’s watershed trails. The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail come from all walks of life, said Greg Yahn, the group’s Guilford County task force leader who’s been volunteering with the group since the 2000s. “They like to hike. Most of us like the idea of giving back,” Yahn said of the volunteers. And they like the idea of leaving a lasting legacy of green space where people can get away into nature.

Both organizations manage monthly trails maintenance sessions in coordination with Parks and Recreation’s trails and greenways team. Volunteers handle general maintenance, like sawing and clearing downed trees, trimming vegetation, rerouting paths, installing trail guide markers, and repairing and building infrastructure like boardwalks and bridges. It’s a big help to the three full-time City staff members who are responsible for maintaining 100 miles of trails and greenways, said Parks and Recreation Trails Supervisor Evan Clark. “We all work together to get things done. It is huge – invaluable. You really can’t put a price tag on it,” Clark said. “It saves us so much time.”
