FUN FOR THE Litle One
The department’s frst youth program specialist, Shelli Scott, developed a full range of new programs for the youngest kids, newborns to fve-year-olds. “It’s an age group that there are lot of cool things that can be done for them,” said Michelle Gill-Mofat, Parks and Recreation’s superintendent of youth services. Parks and Recreation’s recently adopted master plan, Plan2Play, found that there was a dearth of oferings specifcally designed for babies and toddlers. Plan2Play’s also pinpointed a need for STEAM education and a local interest nature activities. Residents said they wanted to “get out and connect with nature.” This summer’s activities include child-friendly hikes, craft classes at regional parks around the city, story and craft time at Gateway Gardens, outdoor yoga class, and creek exploration. See the program guide listing on page 17 for full program details.
GET OUT AND CONNECT WITH NATURE! There is nothing as limitless as the energy of a young child. It’s exhausting. Caregivers must have equal amounts of creativity to fnd new and exciting ways to expend it. No worries – Greensboro Parks and Recreation has a solution for that.

GYC isn’t like a regular volunteering opportunity where you check in and check out without gaining any skills of experience” said Viviane Oyinwola, a former GYC member. “GYC gives you the opportunity to learn how to work hard within a group, become a leader, and carry out your responsibilities with the support of your peers and advisors.” It’s also a way for teens to meet students from across the city – and break out of the social scene at their school. GYC will welcome new members beginning in August 2021. Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications from exceptional high school students who are ready to explore important issues in the Greensboro community while taking part in a service learning project. Petanque. The two permanent cornhole boards and score trackers were added to Keeley Park in 2020 as part of the park’s Phase II development. The department has seen a growing interest in the game during its annual Senior Game competition as well as recreational play at the Smith Active Adult Center. The petanque courts, cornhole boards, and horse- shoe pits are available for open play daily during park and garden hours.
When you are considering games you might play at a park, you probably think traditional team sports like basketball, baseball or volley- ball. But Greensboro parks have a lot more options for game play. Competitive types can try out our Hester Park horseshoe pits, the new cornhole boards at Keeley Park, or even our regulation-size petanque courts! Petanque is a French outdoor bowling game that is similar to bocce. The Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden is home to four regu- lation-sized courts – the only such courts in North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia when they frst opening in 2019. Carolina Petanque, a petanque club based in the Triad, has participated in the annual Parisian Promenade at the botanical garden since 2008. “Petanque is a game for all ages and can be played at both casual and expert levels while providing a fun, challenging experience for the whole family,” said Gary Jones, of Carolinas

SUCCESS AGAINST ALL ODDS Magnolia Long was diagnosed with cystic fbrosis when she was six months old and was given a life expectancy of 34 years. When applying for college, she wondered if she would be able to succeed despite all of her health challenges. Four years and a life-changing surgery later, she has the degree to prove that she did more than just survive – she thrived thanks to UNC Greensboro’s fexibility and support. “I have so much life to live and so much to ofer, and UNCG has given me the opportunities to do things I’ve always wanted to do and become the person I’ve always dreamt of becoming.”
