Service Animal Number: J-9 Revision: 0 Effective Date: 02-01-2023 1.0 POLICY T he City of Greensboro grants the use of a service animal in the workplace by an employee that depends on the animal. 2.0 PURPOSE T he City of Greensboro is responsible for assuring the health and safety of all employees. In keeping with this objective, the City has formulated a policy that allows for employees that depend on a service animal to rely upon the animal while at work while continuing to maintain the health and safety of all employees. 3.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all employees that require the help of a service animal. 4.0 DEFINITIONS 4.1 Service Animal - A dog that is individually trained to perform tasks or do work for the benefit of a person with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. 5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES 5.1 Employees bringing a service animal into the workplace must keep the animal under their direct physical control at all times by means of appropriate leash or other lead of a type and length that enables the employee to maintain close and direct physical control of the animal. The service animal must be crated or confined when not on leash so the animal is not allowed to roam free in the workplace. 5.2 The Department Director may also determine specific locations the service animal is allowed or not allowed to be present within the facility based on business need or the needs of other employees. 5.3 Disruptive (e.g. aggressive behavior, growling, biting or attempting to bite, barking, running around, jumping at or up on people or other excessive physical activity that goes beyond repositioning itself on the down stay) will result in removal and banning of the service animal from the workplace. 5.4 Employees should not bring a service animal to the workplace that is ill and must remove the animal from the workplace if it becomes ill.
