Heat Stress Prevention Number: J-8 Revision: 9 Effective Date: 07-01-2018 1.0 POLICY T his program was developed to protect employees from hazards posed by working in hot environments. 2.0 PURPOSE T he City of Greensboro is committed to preventing heat related illnesses that can occur to employees by implementing the following: A. Identifying, evaluating and controlling potential exposure to extreme temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors B. Providing ample drinking water C. Providing supervisor and employee training D. Establishing heat-related procedures 3.0 SCOPE This program applies to employees that are exposed to elevated temperature and humidity environments at/ or above the following action levels. Working Temperature & Clothing Action Levels All other clothing levels 89° F Non-breathing clothes including vapor barrier clothing or PPE such as chemical resistant suits 52° F This program does not apply to incidental exposure which exists when an employee is not required to perform a work activity in elevated temperature and humidity environments for more than fifteen minutes in any sixty-minute period. Note: It is possible heat related illness might occur at temperatures below the action levels when employees have not acclimated to the sudden and significant increases in temperature and humidity. Supervisors and employees should monitor themselves and their co-workers for signs and symptoms of heat related illness when there is a significant and sudden increase in temperature. An employee who has been newly assigned to a high heat area shall be closely observed by a supervisor or designee for the first 14 days of the employee’s assignment.
