Table of Contents A B C D E F H I J K L List of Appendices G 5.3 The City provides the allocation of a reasonable amount of time (15-25 minutes) for each break as frequently as needed as not to seriously disrupt the operations of the organization. The employee should be completely relieved of duty in order to express milk. 5.4 Supervisors are asked to accommodate times set aside for lactation breaks when arranging T he city promotes a healthy work-life balance for its employees and therefore supports and protects new parents who wish to continue pumping breastmilk for their children upon their return to the workplace. In accordance with the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (PUMP Act) the City establishes a policy to provide break time in an appropriate location for nursing parents. 2.0 PURPOSE T o accommodate new parents who wish to continue pumping upon returning to the workplace and ensure that employees who are pregnant or intending to become pregnant are aware of the accommodations that will be made if they decide to pump in the workplace. 3.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all City employees who want or need to pump for their children. 4.0 DEFINITIONS 4.1 New parent - A parent who is currently nursing their child. 4.2 Lactation Break - Time needed to pump breastmilk. 4.3 Private Space - A room shielded from view and free from the intrusion of others. There must be a place to sit and a flat surface, other than the floor, to place the breast pump and other supplies. Restrooms are not a permissible location. 5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES 5.1 New parents who have offices where privacy can be assured are permitted to take lactation breaks in their office. An alternate location that is a private space (i.e. door with lock, blinds for all windows) will be provided for those that do not have privacy assured offices or do not wish to take lactation breaks in their private office. Restrooms are not a permissible location for these breaks. City and private vehicles are not permissible alternate locations unless it is the preferred location of the nursing parent. 5.2 Alternate locations must be made available when needed by the nursing parent.
