Service to Others (STO) Program Number: F-23 Revision: 0 Effective Date: 10-01-2020 1.0 POLICY T he City of Greensboro provides paid time off for employees who seek to serve others by volunteering with a non-profit organization. 2.0 PURPOSE T he City believes that volunteer service makes our community a better place to live and work. Volunteer service is an ideal way to give back and support those in need. Volunteering also offers personal and professional development opportunities for all employees, such as the chance to develop skills and interests, improve staff morale and further team bonding. 3.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all benefit eligible employees. 4.0 DEFINITIONS 4.1 To Volunteer - The dedication of time and energy for civic, charitable, educational or humanitarian reasons without compensation from the non-profit organization. The commitment must be without pressure or coercion, direct or implied, from the City. 4.2 Non-Profit Organization - an entity that exists for the benefit of the general public, or for educational or charitable reasons. It is without shareholders and without a profit motive. The organization need not be designated as a tax exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service. However, the organization must be real and have a verifiable record of charitable activities. 5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES 5.1 Employees will be credited a designated number of hours of paid leave each January 1 as shown in the following table. Eligible employees will receive a prorated allotment of STO upon adoption of this policy.
