5.1 The probationary period for benefit eligible employees is six (6) months beginning on the date of hire. For Firefighters, the probationary period is 12 months beginning on the date of hire. For Police Officers, the probationary period is from the date of hire and extends to 12 months after the employee is sworn in as a Greensboro Police Officer. 5.2 The probationary period is a benefit eligible employee’s initial period of employment during which the employee may be dismissed from City employment without formal steps being taken according to the H-1 Discipline & Expectations. However, an employee who is dismissed during their probationary period may appeal the dismissal, see Appeals of Dismissal for the appeal process. 5.3 The probationary period is a “trial period” during which the supervisor determines whether the new employee is suitable for and is able to acceptably meet the City’s job performance and behavioral expectations of the position into which the employee has been hired. 5.4 Supervisors may, or may not, choose to award probationary increases based on satisfactory performance. 5.5 Only those employees hired at a salary below the Control Point are eligible for a probationary increase. 5.6 Employees in the General Step Salary Structure are not eligible for a percentage salary increase upon satisfactory completion of their probation. Employees in the General Step Salary Structure will move up one (1) step in the structure upon completing a satisfactory probation performance. 5.7 An employee who receives a salary increase as a result of a promotion, reclassification, control point change, or market adjustment during the employee’s probationary period will not be eligible for a probationary salary increase. 5.8 There is no probationary period following a promotion. 5.9 As an at-will employee, there is no guarantee of salary increases. All increases are subject to change at any time at the sole discretion of the City Council and/or City Manager, or as City compensation polices, programs or practices are introduced, amended, or eliminated. 6.0 PROCEDURES 6.1 The amount of the Probationary Increase is established annually by the People & Culture (P&C) Department as part of the City’s salary administration program and will be included in the current year Probationary Increase Guidelines. 6.2 Hiring Officials may designate whether a new employee is eligible or ineligible for a probationary increase within the guidelines of this policy. This decision will be communicated in the original new hire letter as part of the total compensation package offered to the new employee.
