the probationary period. Probationary status indicates that an employee is in an initial period of employment during which the employee may be terminated from City employment for any lawful reason with no right of appeal. 5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES 5.1 The probationary period for most benefit eligible employees is 6 months; for Police Officers and Firefighters the probationary period is 12 months. 5.2 The probationary period is a benefit eligible employee’s initial period of employment during which the employee may be terminated from City employment for any lawful reason with no right of appeal. 5.3 The probationary period is a “trial period” during which the supervisor determines whether the new employee is suitable for and is able to acceptably meet the City’s job performance and behavioral expectations of the position into which the employee has been hired. 5.4 Supervisors may, or may not, choose to award probationary increases based on satisfactory performance. 5.5 Only those employees hired at a salary below the Control Point are eligible for a probationary increase. 5.6 An employee who receives a salary increase as a result of a promotion, reclassification, control point change, or market adjustment during his probationary period will not be eligible for a probationary salary increase. 5.7 There is no probationary period following a promotion. 5.8 As an at-will employee, there is no guarantee of salary increases. All increases are subject to change at any time at the sole discretion of the City Council and/or City Manager, or as City compensation polices, programs or practices are introduced, amended, or eliminated. 6.0 PROCEDURES 6.1 The amount of the Probationary Increase is established annually by the Human Resources Department as part of the City’s salary administration program and will be included in the current year Probationary Increase Guidelines. 6.2 Hiring Officials may designate whether a new employee is eligible or ineligible for a probationary increase within the guidelines of this policy. This decision will be communicated in the original new hire letter as part of the total compensation package offered to the new employee. 6.3 Completion of a written probationary performance review is required prior to the award of an increase. 7.0 HUMAN RESOURCES CONTACT HR/Compensation
