This feature builds upon the City’s Plan2Play Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Future Growth Framework Map identifies Brown Recreation Center and its surroundings (including additional land to be pursued for acquisition) as a Community Heart for south Greensboro. Shannon Woods Park combined with Shannon Hills Park is also considered to be a candidate for a future Community Heart, placing one on each side of the Randleman Road corridor. Additional potential open spaces are also identified on the Future Framework Map. Draft
The future greenway network is elevated as a priority to encourage more thinking about how these linear parks can connect people to places and improve the function of natural systems. A “green loop” in the heart of the study area encircling the Randleman Road corridor could be the top priority network. These systems connect to downtown and the Buffalo Creek system, which is part of Greensboro’s planned Urban Loop trail in the City’s Plan2Play Parks and Recreation Master Plan. On-street bicycle and pedestrian facilities are also considered part of this system, which can be designed to provide the same level of safety and comfort as the off-street greenways.
The introduction of the Crossmax Orange line along Randleman Road presents a transformative opportunity to support expanded activity centers and corridor concepts, reinforcing the corridor’s central role in community revitalization. By strategically focusing on the areas surrounding planned bus stops, priority can be given to public space enhancements, mixed-use development, and urban design patterns that foster a walkable environment. These improvements not only align with broader mobility and land use goals but also serve as catalysts for sustainable growth and neighborhood vibrancy. This concept is further elaborated in the next section.
