Activity Center Activity Center Expansion

The framework expands on the Activity Centers identified in the GSO 2040 plan, with the most significant one being in the southern part of the study area. Randleman Road is a long and varied corridor, and strengthening it requires a focused and phased approach. Specific activity centers are expanded and sized according to their locations, accessibility, visibility, and potential to accommodate growth through revitalization and well-connected infill development. These areas are the top priority for concentrating new development, infill development, repositioning of under-performing sites, and public improvements. South Greensboro Activity Centers currently designated in the GSO 2040 Comprehensive Plan, as well as those areas that have been added or expanded, should take on the highest and best form of urban design and development described by any activity center category in GSO 2040 Comprehensive Plan, regardless of type.

Each of the key corridors could be improved to their unique optimal conditions to better provide for a variety of safe travel options. Randleman Road could be improved to serve as the area’s primary street and facilitate transit oriented development (TOD) using the Crossmax Orange route. Vandalia Road could be improved using a new configuration. Elm-Euguene could be designed (and in some cases preserved) for its green boulevard character. Every corridor would benefit from a clear vision for multimodal transportation design that reflects its unique location, character, and various connectivity needs. The maps also delineate Randleman Road as a mixed-use and reinvestment corridor, which is consistent with the GSO 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
