South Greensboro Area Plan - Public Review Draft - 9.25.25
Future Greenways System Greenways are vital to communities because they provide safe, scenic routes for walking and biking, promote physical and mental health, and connect neighborhoods to parks, schools, and businesses. They also help protect natural habitats, improve air and water quality, and support local economies by boosting property values and attracting visitors. Overall, greenways enhance quality of life and foster more sustainable, connected communities.

Additional Networks, Alternative Alignments, and Key Connections The planning process has also opened the door to exploring new greenway alignments, including a potential corridor along Randleman Road that would extend northward to Downtown Greensboro. Two additional greenway networks are suggested for further consideration: one along a natural creek corridor east of Rehobeth Church Road, and another alongside an existing rail line between Pleasant Garden Road and Riverdale Road. The creek corridor, in particular, could be studied to determine whether a connection can be made to the future park at Short Farm Road, which would provide south Greensboro with valuable bicycle and pedestrian access to this important amenity. Additionally, the alignment of the greenway east of Randleman Road at Glendale Drive could be reconsidered to integrate with potential future development, rather than being routed behind the shopping center. Maintaining a connection to New Goshen sould remain a priority within the overall network.
Potential Plan2Play “Community Heart”
Alamance Church Rd greenways are in need of various improvements to enhance their usability and appeal. These improvements include better street crossings, upgraded amenities, clearer signage, and in some cases, revised routing and additional connection points to improve accessibility and connectivity. This plan fully supports the expansion of the greenway system, recognizing its potential to strengthen the City’s multimodal transportation network and recreational offerings. The Green Loop A key opportunity lies in prioritizing the development of a “green loop” within the heart of the study area. This loop would connect existing greenways with two planned “Community Hearts,” two locations along Randleman Road, and several centrally located neighborhoods and destinations. A small segment of this loop, located in the western part of the study area, presents a promising starting point. This segment is further described and illustrated in Chapter 3 – Environment, Parks, and Open Space. Draft Liber ty Rd I-85 400 US Feet
