Collaborate internally - Increased collaboration within the Department will ultimately lead to better parks and facilities, improved services and programs, and increased awareness among staff of the goals of the Department. The Department should identify areas for improved collaboration between the divisions. This is especially evident with regards to programming and services. Currently programming is managed at many levels across many parks and facilities. This arrangement leads to a lack of knowledge among many staff about the Department offerings. The Department should consider hiring a full-time Program Leader / Program Specialist position and associated support personnel to help develop and implement programs and services (See Expand #5 Create Transformative Programs).
Work from the vision - The Department vision statement states “We see ourselves as leaders, building betters lives to build a better community.” It is imperative that all staff understand the importance of this vision and can directly relate how their efforts help achieve this goal. The contributions of all staff members to the mission and vision of the Department should be clearly communicated at all levels and across multiple forums including all-staff meeting, division retreats, and digital communications. Sharing success stories inside and outside of the Department will help create a culture of pride, build morale, and increase recognition of the importance the Department plays in the health of the city. Furthermore, the conversations will increase intra-departmental collaboration and awareness, identify opportunities for partnerships, and highlight challenges.
