ThishasbeenayearoftransitionsfortheGreensboro Police Departm ent(GPD)leadership.In April,PoliceChiefBrian Jam es announced hisplansto retireafterserving 26 yearsatthe departm ent.Hejoined UNC ChapelHilasitspolicechief.

In M ay,AssistantChiefTeresaBiflewasnam ed interim chiefof police.Bifle,a 28-yearveteran ofthedepartm ent,served asthe assistantchiefoftheM anagem entBureau.Sheled thedepartm ent forsevenm onths,laying thefoundationfornew opportunitiesand pushing curentinitiativesforward astheCityworked to recruita new chiefthrough a com petitive,nationalsearch and extensive interview process. On Decem ber16,CityM anagerTaiwo Jaiyeobaselected Greensboro AssistantPoliceChief JohnW .Thom psonto betheCity’snew chiefofpolice. Thom psonbeganhiscareerinlaw enforcem entin1998 withtheAsheboro PoliceDepartm ent and joined GPD in2003.Hehasserved indivisionsacrossthedepartm ent,including Planning and Research,Vice/Narcotics,ResourceM anagem ent,and,m ostrecently,PatrolBureau. Thom pson hasbeen instrum entalin working with research partnersto bring variousprojects to thedepartm ent,and wilcontinueto prioritizeinnovation,research,and evaluation in hisrole aspolicechief. HeholdsaBachelorofSciencedegreeinBusinessM anagem ent,BachelorofArtsdegreein JusticePolicyStudiesAdm inistration from Guilford Colegeand aM aster’sin Business Adm inistration from PfeiferUniversity.Heisalso agraduateoftheSeniorM anagem ent InstituteforPoliceand theSouthern PoliceInstituteAdm inistrativeOficersprogram . ChiefThom pson hasalreadybegun establishing hisleadership team and overseeing a departm entreorganization to beteralocatelim ited resources.Hewilalso focuson recruitm ent,retention,com m unityrelationships,violentcrim e,and evidence-based policing strategies.

Aspiring policeoficerrecruitsreceive750 hoursof instruction from oficersand professionalstaf m em berswho aresubjectm aterexpertsin their fields.Oficersjoining GPD from otheragencies receive100 hoursoftraining.Annualy,aloficers, including participantsin thesworn volunteerprogram , m ustcom plete24 hoursofm andated training.In2022, thetraining topicsincluded legalupdates,juvenile justice,m entalhealth response,enhancing com m unity policing,ethicsand firearm s.
