Corridor Transformation Example Second Street, Rochester, Minnesota

Travel Lane ±11’ The Second Street corridor in Rochester, Minnesota, underwent a major transformation between 2009 and 2015 to shift from a car-dominated thoroughfare into a vibrant, multimodal district known as the Uptown District. Previously characterized by high-speed traffic and limited pedestrian access, the corridor was redesigned to improve safety, accessibility, and economic vitality. The $7 million project included lane reductions, new bike lanes, ADA-compliant crossings, public art, and streetscape enhancements. As a result, traffic speeds dropped, pedestrian activity increased, and property values rose by 30% within a year, helping to revitalize the area and attract new investment.
