04.03 Streets & Right-of-way Strategies Short-term improvements in the public right-of-way—especially through Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper (LQC) and tactical urbanism approaches—can dramatically enhance the safety, accessibility, and vibrancy of streets. These strategies focus on low-cost, fast-to-implement interventions that test ideas, build community support, and lay the groundwork for more permanent infrastructure. By targeting key segments of the street network, cities can create more walkable, people-centered environments that support local businesses, improve public health, and foster social interaction.

Artistic Crosswalks
Reducing the number of travel lanes or narrowing lane widths can calm traffic, improve safety, and create space for bike lanes, wider sidewalks, or landscaping.
Colorful, community-designed crosswalks increase visibility and add character to intersections, encouraging drivers to slow down and enhancing pedestrian safety.
