South Greensboro Area Plan - Public Review Draft - 9.25.25

Vandalia Road 3

This key east-west corridor features varied lane widths, some of which are wider than may be needed, and a disconnected sidewalk network. This roadway is maintained by the City of Greensboro, and is already the subject of several active and planned projects to make improvements. It appears to be a strong candidate for a redesign that reduces lanes to improve safety and create space for walking, biking, and transit. An ongoing City project between South Elm Eugene Street and Pleasant Garden Road will add sidewalks and a center turn lane, improving access to the eastern part of the study area (see project profile and link to the City of Greensboro project website to learn more). This plan examines the entire Vandalia Road corridor as a way to connect the study area from east to west for all modes of transportation. To better explore and describe conditions and opportunities, the corridor has been divided into four segments, shown on the next page.

Draft

Opportunity: Convert four- and five-lane sections of Vandalia Road to a three-lane configuration (“road diet”) to calm traffic and create space

for multimodal improvements.
