PICKLEBALL Racket-tacular! On an afternoon last summer, neither the humidity nor the threat of a downpour deterred the Walkers and their grandsons from a jaunt to Smith Community Park. There was a little friendly smack talk, and a whole lot of furious swishing of paddles. This east Greensboro neighborhood park – right outside the Smith Active Adult Center on Fairview Street – is home to the City’s newest attraction: six outdoor pickleball courts. Greensboro residents like the Walkers have been waiting for years to have outdoor space to play this popular sport. “We like the exercise,” said Bonnie Walker, watching her husband Steve play a match with their 12-year-old grandson Lucas Bacon, of Raleigh. “We like the people.” Greensboro Parks and Recreation has three outdoor court locations open from dawn until dusk daily for open play. The department also offers beginners clinics for people who are new to the sport. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing leisure activities in the country. The USA Pickleball Association has had a 650 percent increase in membership since 2013. Pickleball is a racket sport that can be played in pairs or by individuals. Game rules are similar to ping-pong, but play requires movements more akin to tennis. Courts are smaller and games are shorter in duration than a tennis match, making it popular with older active adults. “It is not as taxing physically but it’s an excellent workout,” said Parks and Recreation Planner Vonda Martin. “Anybody can play it.” Want to play? Monthly clinics | open play daily Greensboro Sportsplex, Smith Community Park, Lake Daniel Park More info: www.greensboro-nc.gov/pickleball Admission is free

Gently tap the giant illuminated screen in the Barber Park Event Center rotunda, and you will discover some amazing ladies. Greensboro educators, researchers, activists, advocates, journalists, nonprofit leaders, a musician, and even a pilot. Ten were “firsts” in their field or office. All have a story to share at the Ruth Wicker Tribute to Women, the first stand-alone exhibit in North Carolina and one of only a handful of similar exhibits in the country that exclusively honor the contributions and achievements of women. “We’re delighted to honor women who influenced, transformed, and shaped the rich history of our city,” said Parks and Recreation Director Nasha McCray. The tribute is free to tour, and is open six days a week. School and community groups are welcome. Parks and Recreation premiered the permanent exhibit in January 2019 at the event center, a new rental facility. The Barber Park Event Center is available for corporate events, weddings, and other special parties for up to 200 guests. Renters have access to the exhibit gallery, as well as the patio and pergola area for cocktail hours.

Community Gardens

Community gardens add beauty to our parks and provide an opportunity to learn and grow fresh, nutritionally rich produce. Thriving community gardens are a great way to bring people together and create healthy, strong communities. Our community gardens can serve as an outdoor classroom, provide the opportunity for everyone to learn the importance of community, stewardship, and environmental responsibility, and growing your own vegetables encourages healthier eating. The Parks and Recreation Department currently supports several community gardens within our parks.
