Greensboro Plan2Play Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2019

114 - FEBRUARY 2019

Case Study: Imagine Nocho Park and Windsor Recreation Center Many facilities and parks are good candidates to become a community heart. Windsor Recreation Center is a prime example. Windsor is directly across Gate City Boulevard from Nocho Park and Chavis Library. A transformation to community heart would strengthen the physical and programmatic elements of these adjacencies and attract more people to the park and recreation center. Today, the Nocho Park includes a baseball diamond, basketball courts, the adjacent community center, and open, shaded lawn. Many other neighborhood parks are similarly organized. The plan envisions the following possibilities for Nocho Park, and similar sites, that improve: • Create safe connections to adjacent civic uses like libraries and schools. • Paint a neighborhood mural to spruce up the swimming pool area and give the building a facelift! • Create flexible spaces for transformative activities like pickleball,

• Seek community input for indoor program improvements such as computer labs, classes and other programmed spaces. • Extend building hours for youth activities like midnight basketball. • Partner with city agencies to invest in street lighting that also lights sidewalks and intersections, ensuring that the park is safer for use in late night hours. • Adapt lighted parking lots at night into safe spaces for families to gather for informal events.

Another excellent example of a Community Heart candidate is the Peeler Recreation Center. Peeler is embedded within the Woodmere and King’s Forest neighborhoods and has adjacencies to McGirt Horton Library. Caldcleugh Multicultural Center is located between Smith Homes, an affordable housing community, and Wiley Elementary School. While Hampton Park does not include significant indoor park facilities, and lacks synergistic adjacencies such as shared boundaries with schools or libraries, it does play a strong role in the surrounding community through the on-site basketball program and may be a candidate for a larger role such as a community heart.

yoga classes, or life skills courses. During big events, the space can convert back into parking.
