Discover Greensboro Winter/Spring 2022
Parks and Recreation and partners are working to reimagine the former Caldclaugh Multicultural Center – with stronger community collaborations and a new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) focus. Now called Xperience @ Caldcleugh, Parks and Recreation has taken over managing the 1700 Orchard St. center from Creative Greensboro. Department leadership are contemplating how the space, with its organic garden, classrooms, and black box theater, can better serve the needs of its neighbors. That includes working with long- standing tenant, the Boys and Girls Club, Wiley Elementary School, and the Greensboro Housing Authority, which manages the nearby Smith Homes community. “We’re already working to find out what their needs and wants are for programming,” said Youth Services Superintendent Michelle Gill-Moffat. “We’re really looking to see how we can continue to increase partnerships in the community.” The Youth Services staff is providing new programs for children at the
organic garden. They’re also hosting STEAM classes, which will provide opportunities for flying drones, learning robotics, exploding science experiments, and exploring how to compost in the garden. The department has also partnered with The Poetry Café’s Josephus Thompson for a monthly open mic for artists of all different calibers, from rappers, singers and poets, to musicians, dancers, and visual artists. Kids 10-18 can perform alongside a live band for this unique opportunity, which runs through February 2022. The programs are free or low-cost, and most take place on nights or weekends. Want to Go?
