The lakes are home to a wide range of waterfowl, leggy, long-necked herons, and birds of prey. Keep an eye out for herons that dive-bomb into the water for fish. “You got a really cool bird habitat out here,” Rhead says of Lake Townsend. “We’ve got bald eagles. There is a really awesome giant osprey nest out here.” All three lakes have fishing piers if you are feeling sporty. Lake Townsend’s pier is accessible, providing easier access if you use a mobility device like a walker or wheelchair. For a different view, try one of the watershed trails. Lake Brandt and Lake Higgins have trailheads right at the marina. These easy paths are good for beginners and children. Just stay on the trail and be sure to turn around when you are ready to come back. Or bring you bike to try the mountain biking trails. There’s plenty to experience.
