FromGridiron to Growth R.E.D. Zone Football gives kids a chance to play, lead, and learn. Ten years from now, kids from Parks and Recreation’s football league aren’t going to remember which games they won or lost, says Assistant Athletic Director Phil Hardin. But they’re going to remember stepping into the huddle with their friends. And all the things they learned out on the field – how to lead by calling the plays, how to work as a team, how to be confident – those are the things they will carry with them forever, Hardin says.
“We don’t get tied up with the wins and losses of it,” he says. “We get caught up with trying to make the young person the best player we can make them. We are teaching them some life lessons they can learn as they grow into an adult.” The City of Greensboro, High Point, and Thomasville have partnered up for R.E.D. Zone Football, a league that emphasizes the “recreation, education, and development.” Kids 7-12 can register for the 2022 fall sea son beginning June 6. R.E.D. Zone is affordable and convenient for families. Kids practice at the well-kept fields at Jaycee Park and most home games are held at the recently renovated Hester Park fields.

Grownups don’t have to spend too much time shuttling kids around. But players still get to dip their toes in the travel league experience when they play against Thomasville or High Point teams. “You are getting the best of both worlds – a practice location in Greensboro, but you also get to play against other orga nizations,” says Athletic Superintendent Monique Floyd. Playing with Greensboro Parks and Rec reation also means a quality experience – from proper uniforms and equipment to trained staff leading the league. R.E.D. Zone is designed with the enjoyment and safety of the players in mind. Coaches are

UrbanOasis Escape into nature, just minutes from bustling city life. Standing on a short stretch of sandy shoreline at the marina, Lake Townsend stretches off into the distance, a perfect mirror of the blue, cloud-filled sky interrupted only briefly by forested shoreline. Somehow, the atmosphere is different here. With the sailboats and bald eagles and 1,500 acres of reservoir, you are in the middle of a green and blue nowhere. Only you’re not. You are 15 minutes from downtown Greensboro. Lake Townsend, Lake Brandt, and Lake Higgins are the City of Greensboro’s reservoirs, providing drinking water to 300,000-plus people. They are also vast nature preserves with unique ecosystems, offering city dwellers the peace and calm
of the great outdoors and the thrill of water sports. All you’ve got to do is come visit. Whatever Floats Your Boat Because the lakes provide drinking water, there is no swimming allowed. There is still plenty to do on the water. All three lakes provide private launch for motorized and non-motorized boat owners. They are also great places for beginners who want to learn says Megan Rhead lake activity specialist at Townsend. “For a city this size, it is hard to find no car noise and be out in true nature.” You can rent a kayak, standup paddleboard, or rowboat at any lake. The rental fee gives you access for the full day and provides all the safety equipment you need. The equipment is designed to make it easy

can get the same benefits of nature from the shore. Relax along the banks with a picnic to take in the views. The lakes are home to a wide range of waterfowl, leggy, long-necked herons, and birds of prey. Keep an eye out for herons that dive-bomb into the water for fish. “You got a really cool bird habitat out here,” Rhead says of Lake Townsend. “We’ve got bald eagles. There is a really awesome giant osprey nest out here.” All three lakes have fishing piers if you are feeling sporty. Lake Townsend’s pier is accessible, providing easier access if you use a mobility device like a walker or wheelchair. For a different view, try one of the watershed trails. Lake Brandt and Lake Higgins have trailheads right at the marina. These easy paths are good for beginners and children. Just stay on the trail and be sure to turn around when you are ready to come back. Or bring you bike to try the mountain biking trails. There’s plenty to experience.
for a wide range of people to use. Lake Higgins even has an adaptive kayak launch that will help people who have some stability concerns get into boat more easily. So no need to be nervous if you are a newbie. First-timers need only ask, and they will get instruction on some basic skills to get going. “We have brand new people come out all the time. They want to try something new,” said Michael Romano, the environmental education supervisor who oversees the lake activity specialists. Lake Townsend also offers a unique boating opportunity. It rents one-, two-, and three-person sail boats. In partnership with the Lake Townsend Yacht Club, children and adults can learn to sail. Nature Escape If boats aren’t your thing, don’t worry. You
