outdoor experiences, and help bring people together, is the most fulflling part of this work!” Nearing the Finish Line While the Downtown Greenway has been busy with programming, it’s about to get even busier as the fnal construction is underway. The remaining Western Branch section, which follows the former Atlantic and Yadkin railroad corridor between Spring Garden Street and Smith Street, is expected to be completed in late 2025/early 2026. Alongside this “fnal mile” a number of public art works will be installed, while stream restoration work on the College Branch Stream will highlight the project’s environmental benefts. “It is so exciting to be approaching this milestone,” said Dabney Sanders, Downtown Greenway Project Manager of Action Greensboro. “To see the economic development, community connections, incredible public art, and the many ways that people are using the Downtown Greenway is rewarding.” For more information about the project’s history, upcoming programs, volunteer opportunities, and more, visit www.downtowngreenway.org
The Downtown Greenway is a valuable resource for Greensboro and continues to support the City’s commitment to becoming a greener city, with improved connectedness and a hub of recreation and entertainment. The 4-mile multi-use shared path encircles downtown Greensboro, providing residents and visitors a space to walk, run, bike, and explore. With specialty gardens, pocket parks, a public orchard, and more than 40 pieces of public art, there is so much to discover along the urban loop. Beyond the physical beauty of the space, the Downtown Greenway is thriving with an array of programming and events, made possible through community partnerships with local businesses, non profts, and special interest groups. Each year, more than 175 programs are ofered along the Downtown Greenway for the public to enjoy. These cover a variety of topics, such as arts and culture, environmental education, health and wellness, social gatherings and youth programming. A few popular programs include canvas painting classes, speed friending, geocaching, ftness classes, children’s storytimes, bird watching, and guided walking tours – just to name a few! Three large-scale signature events are also hosted annually: Wheels on the Greenway (May), the Downtown Greenway Run & Block Party (September), and the Downtown Greenway Community Picnic (October). “There are so many beautiful spaces and places to explore along the Downtown Greenway, and it’s always a fun challenge to come up with new ideas for fun or educational programs for the community to participate,” said Chelsea Phipps, Greenway and Gardens Program Coordinator for the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. “Knowing that we can have a positive impact on Greensboro residents and visitors by ofering unique
