FIND YOUR SUMMER SQUAD Looking for a way to keep your tweens and teens busy and engaged through the long summer vacation? Here’s the tonic for what ails you: One drop of Summer Night Lights, a sprinkling of Xtreme Teen Adventure Week, and some service learning thrown in for good measure. The City’s signature summertime teen program offers a wide range of free activities and special events at local parks, recreation centers, and libraries. This year’s roundup includes basketball skills clinics, boxing lessons, classes for painting, photography, cooking, dance, and pool parties Summer 2020 is bringing some changes to SNL’s events at the Greensboro Sportsplex. This year, all teens or their guardians will have to register their teen in advance if they want to attend any of the Sportsplex events. Each teen will receive a key fob, which they will use to check in at the Sportsplex. Teens or guardians can register online at www. greensboro-nc.gov/SNL and pick up a key fob at the Sportsplex, recreation centers, or the Parks and Recreation headquarters, 1001 Fourth St. The Sportsplex events will also end one hour earlier, at 10 pm. XTREME TEEN ADVENTURE WEEK Gets your middle-schooler out in nature, exploring Lake Higgins, and meeting new friends in this week- long immersive outdoor experience. They will take on new challenges like mountain climbing, kayaking, and endangered animal care — without having to pitch a tent or travel very far. Rising high school sophomores or older teens can apply to be Counselor in Training (CIT) at a Parks and Recreation camp. Teens build leadership skills and get job experience. There are two four-week sessions available, and financial assistance is available for families who need it. Students with a special interest in sports or working with individuals with disabilities may apply to serve at the All Star Sports Camp or Camp Joy. “It’s a great way to get real-world experience and service learning hours,” said Alex Zaleski, who manages the CIT program. Registration begins February 17. SERVICE LEARNING Rising sophomores and older | M-F | $$$$ www.greensboro-nc.gov/GYC Looking for a resume-builder for your teen? Try one of the service-learning programs. Greensboro Youth Council Service Learning Camp offers two sessions in which high-schoolers can explore the topics of poverty and diversity while earning service learning hours. Registration begins February 17.
