Nature Immersion Nature through mindful engagement The world can often be an incredibly loud and overwhelming place. Most folks have to contend with the daily grind of simply living, as work, family, and general life responsibilities become all-consuming. And that’s not even looking at everything else going on around us. Sometimes what you really need is to, as the youth would say, “go touch grass.” This idea of getting outside is something that the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department believes in because to the department, it’s meant to be both metaphorical and literal. That’s why this fall the department is offering up its Nature Immersion Forest Bathing: Nature Through Mindful Engagement program! Led by Laura Coffee, a certified forest therapy guide, this program series will introduce participants to the serene world of Shinrin-Yoku (translated to “forest bathing”). This Japanese form of therapy offers participants the opportunity do something so incredibly simple, yet effective – exist outdoors in green spaces, and engage their senses to their surroundings to forge a deeper connection with nature.
The department’s Active Adults division will host four sessions at some of the City’s local parks. • Saturday, September 12, from 10 am to 12 noon: Summerfield Community Park, 5404 Centerfield Rd. Meet at flagpole near the Community Center. • Sunday, October 25, from 2-4 pm: Bog Garden at Benjamin Park, 1101 Hobbs Rd. Meet at Dr. Joe Statue near the Starmount Farms Drive entrance. • Sunday, November 29, from 2-4 pm: Thankfulness & Gratitude Theme. Haw River State Park, Iron Ore Access, 6068 N. Church St. Meet outside of restrooms in parking lot. • Saturday, December 19, from 10 am to noon: Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. 2332 New Garden Rd. Meet at the statue of Nathanael Greene on horseback. While registration not required, completion of an Active Adults health form is required on day of session. Remember to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, bring water, hiking poles, sunscreen, and bug spray, if needed. Portable stools and mats are available for use, or you’re more than welcome to bring your own. Given the activity will be held outside (rain or shine), participants should call the weather line at 336-373 7940 beginning at 8 am on the day of the session to stay as informed as possible.
