Teeing Of for a Cause: Te 2024
Greensboro Parks Foundation Open Mark your calendars for October 16, 2024, as the Greensboro Parks Foundation invites golf enthusiasts and community supporters to participate in the second annual Greensboro Parks Foundation Open charity golf tournament. This event promises not only a day of friendly competition but also an opportunity to contribute to the rich legacy and bright future of the historic Gillespie Golf Course. Nestled in east Greensboro, Gillespie Golf Course has been a cornerstone of the community since its opening in 1941. Designed by Perry Maxwell, the renowned architect behind Augusta National's redesign, this 104-acre facility has witnessed signifcant moments in both golf and civil rights history. In 1955, the course became a battleground for equality when the "Greensboro Six" defed segregation laws to play, leading to their arrest and subsequent legal battles that ultimately forced the integration of the course. Today, a historical marker stands as a testament to their courage and the course's pivotal role in the fght for civil rights. Gillespie Golf Course continues to break barriers and promote inclusivity in the sport. It holds the distinction of being the frst course in North Carolina to ofer PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), a program using golf to support the well-being of military personnel and veterans. The course is also at the forefront of adaptive golf, providing specialized equipment and lessons for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, it serves as home to First Tee Central Carolina, nurturing young golfers from all backgrounds. While beloved by the community, Gillespie Golf Course is showing signs of age, prompting the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department to initiate a comprehensive renovation plan. The Greensboro Parks Foundation Open aims to support these eforts, with proceeds going towards course renovations, practice range upgrades, new shelters, and other enhancements to improve the overall golfng experience.
The tournament, set for a shotgun start at 9:30 am, ofers an exciting day of golf with various competitions, including long drive and closest to the pin for both men and women. Early bird registration is available at $240 per four-person team or $60 per player, with prices increasing slightly after September 1. The feld is limited to 13 teams, so early registration is encouraged. Participants will enjoy more than just golf. The day includes open driving range access, a complimentary lunch, and concludes with an awards ceremony and rafe. For those looking to improve their chances, mulligans will be available for purchase. As we look to the future, the Greensboro Parks Foundation Open represents more than just a golf tournament. It's a celebration of Gillespie's storied past, a commitment to its vibrant present, and an investment in its promising future. By participating in or sponsoring this event, you're not just playing a round of golf; you're becoming part of a legacy that continues to enrich the Greensboro community.
For more information on registration or sponsorship opportunities, visit greensboroparksfoundation.org/golf or contact Paula Barger at 336-373-2560. Join us in swinging for a cause and help shape the future of this beloved Greensboro landmark. 23
