GYC at Greensboro Cultural Center

Got a kidwho needs to findwhere they fit? Try the Greensboro Youth Council. High school students from across Guilford County come together for this fun, teen-led volunteer and development group. They make new friends, challenge themselves to try new things, and spend their time giving back in the community. Best of all – it’s a program where teens are in charge. From organizing the annual prom attire and holiday gift giveaways to serving on the GYC leadership council, it’s the students who make this group a success. “It was like a breath of fresh air, honestly, seeing other students your age lead these big projects like Ghoulash and Santa’s Workshop, working and helping our community,” says Jacob Simmons, a past GYC board member who graduated from the Middle College at UNCG this year. Jasia Stevenson, the Parks and Recreation staff member who oversees GYC, says it is a joy watching students grow as members. She pointed out that past members have gone on to receive scholarships to college or even join the City staff.

“We are not looking for you to be perfect person. We want you to come as you are. Volunteer and in that timeframe you are going to grow as a person,” she says. Members can take free monthly GYC Institute Workshops on diverse topics of interest to teens. They also earn service learning hours by volunteering with the group. GYC also recognizes members with swag, gift cards, annual year-end awards, letters of recommendation, and preferred placement as Parks and Recreation Counselors in Training and in GYC Service Learning Camp. “If you want to learn, have leadership opportunities, do service for your community, and have fun while doing it, join GYC,” Simmons says.
