The Greensboro Coliseum Complex (the “Coliseum Complex”) is a multi-building entertainment and sports facility serving the citizens of Greensboro, surrounding areas and beyond since 1959. From 2010 through 2019, the Greensboro Coliseum Complex completed an estimated $85 million in capital improvements, financed by Limited Obligation Bonds and funded by the City’s Hotel/Motel occupancy tax collections and $8 million in grant funds. The venues renovated at the Coliseum Complex include the Arena, Special Events Center, Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) and an auxiliary building that houses the Greensboro Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
The Greensboro Coliseum has a long and distinguished history of hosting ACC and NCAA basketball championships, as well as concerts by some of the top artists in the recording industry. The Greensboro Coliseum hosted the 2016 USA Masters Games and the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, an event that made a highly successful North Carolina debut in 2011 and again in January 2020. The Coliseum has hosted the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament since 2000, with the exception of 2017, including successfully hosting the tournament in early March 2020 and will continue to do so through 2023. The Coliseum also hosted the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, returning in 2020 but was suspended mid-tournament due to the pandemic. The tournament was held at the Greensboro Coliseum in 2021 with limited fans in attendance due to Covid-19 restrictions. The ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament will return again in 2023. In addition, the Coliseum hosted the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament in 2006, 2007 and 2019 and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2001, 2006, 2009 and 2012, and was to return in 2020, but was cancelled due to Covid-19. An announcement came in October 2020 to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament in 2023. With these announcements, along with the previously scheduled ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, Greensboro will host all three major tournaments in 2023. In July 2021, the Greensboro Coliseum facility was awarded and received $10 million from a Shuttered Venue Operator Grant, administered by the Small Business Administration, which will help offset certain revenue shortfalls due to pandemic limitations. With restrictions currently lifted and Covid-19 protocols in place, revenues for fiscal year 2022 are anticipated to return to normal levels as many rescheduled events have already been programmed. The Greensboro Coliseum is also home to an arena football franchise, the Carolina Cobras of the National Arena League, which began their in augural season in April 2018.
