Rising high school sophomores or older teens can apply to be Counselor in Training (CIT) at a Parks and Recreation camp. Teens build leadership skills and get job experience. There are two four-week sessions available, and financial assistance is available for families who need it. Students with a special interest in sports or working with individuals with disabilities may apply to serve at the All Star Sports Camp or Camp Joy. “It’s a great way to get real-world experience and service learning hours,” said Alex Zaleski, who manages the CIT program. Registration begins February 17. SERVICE LEARNING Rising sophomores and older | M-F | $$$$ www.greensboro-nc.gov/GYC Looking for a resume-builder for your teen? WE BUILD LEADERS It’s an impressive group of teens. Committed volunteers. Aspiring professionals. Soon-to-be valedictorians. Kids with strong world views and post-high school plans. Teens become adults at Greensboro Parks and Recreation’s long-running Greensboro Youth Council and Youth Leadership Greensboro. Both offer high schoolers a chance to earn service learning hours.

GREENSBORO YOUTH COUNCIL (GYC) High school freshmen and older | $ www.greensboro-nc.gov/gyc

GYC is a place where teens break out of their shells, build new relationships, and learn how to be leaders who serve their community. The 58-year-old organization offers teens a wide range of volunteer opportunities, including running events like Ghoulash, an annual Halloween festival, and Santa’s Workshop, a toy drive that provides free items to families in need. GYC members are required to do 30 hours of volunteer work per school year. They earn hours by volunteering at events, working in the GYC office, or attending training sessions on topics like time management and resume writing. “You are doing something that you wouldn’t do in any other organization. What organization do you know where students put on actual projects?” said Naya Davis, a former GYC chair. “The student volunteers play a huge role in it. It wouldn’t be possible without them.” It’s also a way for teens to meet students from across the city and break out of the social scene at their school. GYC will welcome new members beginning in August 2020.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP GREENSBORO (YLG) High school sophomores and older | $$$ Accepting applications starting May 1 at www.greensboro-nc.gov/ylg Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications from exceptional high school students who are ready to explore important issues in the Greensboro community while taking part in a service learning project. YLG is an immersive leadership experience held annually October through March. A group of 30 or fewer students are selected for a program designed by past participants. It includes full day sessions with class visits to businesses and nonprofit organizations to meet experts and influencers on local issues and hot topics facing the community. It’s a chance for them understand how Greensboro works so they can become better advocates and problem-solvers, build their resumes with real-world leadership experience, and meet other driven teens. “It was a great opportunity to meet a lot of kids around the city who are doing great things,” said Cameron Blizard, 18, an YLG graduate.

SMITH AND TROTTER ACTIVE ADULT CENTERS Parks & Recreation expands opportunities for adults 50 plus.

Goodbye “seniors,” hello “active adults.” Greensboro has traded in the “senior” label for something that’s a more accurate description of what it offers older generations. Last year Parks and Recreation renamed its senior center the “Smith Active Adult Center” and dropped the age range for people who can participate in activities there from 55 to 50. This spring, the department opens the revamped Trotter Recreation Center with a new focus on activities for older adults to meet the ever-growing needs of seniors in the city. “This is an active, energetic welcoming place for all ages and abilities,” said Greensboro Parks and Recreation’s Jennie Matkins, who oversees programming for older adults. “It’s not a place of just old people sitting around. It’s a very active building. It is a very active environment.” The centers offer free fitness classes and a low-cost fitness center. Smith has aquatics classes in its indoor pool. Fannie Thompson, 73, a Greensboro resident and a member of the Smith Center advisory board, takes the arthritis aqua program to “stay fit and active, making sure my limbs are able to move.” But there are also more intense activities. “We have classes from chair balance all the way up to Zumba and boot camp and cardio sculpt and yoga

on the mat for those younger, able-bodied folks who want a good workout,” Matkins said. Ellen Drehmann, 66, a Greensboro resident, visits the fitness room, joins in some of the craft activities, and visits to play cards with friends. “A lot of times there is a misconception that we are kind of a rehab (facility). We are not. We are active, vital seniors that are looking for place to be active and creative,” Drehmann said. The centers also host a range of social activities – including craft clubs, dances, hiking outings, and day trips – plus regular speakers on topics like retirement and Medicare. Trotter has a small computer lab with six public computers, available for workshops or personal use. Trotter’s proximity to Hester Park, with its fishing pond, archery range, and walking track, also have the department considering new program opportunities.

KEELEY PARK DISC GOLF COURSE Northeast Greensboro course drawing rave reviews from disc golfers. It isn’t even a year old, and already the new Keeley Park Disc Golf Course is a favorite among Triad players. The course and new mountain bike trail are the first features of this second phase of Keeley Park development. Andrew Duvall and Michael Shugart of Innova Disc Golf designed the 18-hole course. “The City of Greensboro wanted to invest in their community with a top level course,” Duvall said. “Keeley Park is as nice of a park as you will find in the country and the disc golf course had to match.” The course shows off rolling hills, large open areas, wooded areas, and even a fairway through a bamboo forest. “It’s a lot like designing a great trail. It needs to tell a story, and you need to have variety both in what you are playing and a variety in what you are looking at,” Duvall said. Disc golf is played with rules similar to traditional golf. The Keeley Park course offers par 3s, 4s, and 5s. Several holes have two tee pads, so players can get a variety of different experiences from the same course. It can be enjoyed by beginners and tournament players. A disc golf course pro shop will open at the Keeley Park Sprayground later this year.
